Valentine's Day. Here it comes again. Last year we ran a list of things you can do if you're single in February, and got a great response. So this year, we're updating the list with some new ideas for how to spend this highly commercialized 'holiday'.

Because even though you may not want to celebrate the idea of 'romantic love,' your life is filled with all kinds of love, if only you take the time to notice: unconditional love for your children, the soul-sister (or brother) affection for your best friend, the gratitude for all the people who make your life easier, etc. So here are some things you can do on Valentine's Day (and all of February) to honor the loves of your life:

1. Indulge in something decadent.
If you love sugar or glitter, treat yourself to a heart shaped box of chocolate (dark chocolate even has health benefits!) or pamper yourself with some new jewelry. You'll most likely save money with the sales this month! (We know this one made the list last year, but how can we not mention chocolate and jewelry?)

2. Assemble all the special people in your life and have a Girl's or Guy's Night Out!
Or even better, a Girl's Night In - complete with home makeovers, cheesy movies and lots of high caloric foods (cheesecake and chocolate is a must!). Celebrate your strength and energy! (And for men, it's perfect timing to plan ahead for March Madness!)

3. Take some time to give back.
Start training for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, raise money for those who are less fortunate or do something closer to home with a visit to a nursing home or animal shelter. Let compassion rule your heart.

4. Tell your best friends and family what you need.
They may think you're 'over the breakup", and may not understand how certain triggers can buy you a ticket for the emotional roller coaster. Ask them for help.

5. Allow yourself to feel whatever comes up.
Cry. Pout. Bemoan your lack of candlelit dinner or couples' massage. But only for a short time. Let yourself wallow for an hour and then let it go. Life can be painful and difficult, but it also has joy and light. Don't let this momentary situation define who you are.

6. Express your gratitude.
Make a list every day of the things you are grateful for and type each list into Wordle.net. At the end of the month, you'll have created a beautiful illustration of the most important things in your life. Print it out and frame it as a reminder.

7. Maybe this is the year you join an online dating service.
Take the plunge and sign up. If you don't think you're ready, make a list of what's in your way. Then start tackling some of those obstacles so you will be ready and dating by next Valentine's Day.

8. Flirt
This is as simple as smiling and looking directly into someone's eyes. Experiment on the barista who makes your morning latte (the guys at my local Starbucks are incredible flirts!). Brush off those skills that may be long forgotten and practice for when you do meet someone you like and want to attract.

9. Manifest your mate.
Create a vision board of what you're looking for in a lover, partner or 'someone you could spend time with' (whatever term you are comfortable with). Then create a visual of who that person will be, and more importantly, how you will feel with that person. Use it as a guide to attract that person into your life.

10. Shake off the temptation to self-pity, and be your own valentine!
Go see a movie, sing cheesy love songs to yourself and buy yourself a gift. Lavish yourself in all your desires- you deserve it!

No need to mope around this Valentine's Day. Use the time to love yourself, create your own love, or show others how much you love them!

Moderate alcohol consumption has been shown in research to have a beneficial, protective effect on the heart, particularly red wine, or beer: 1, 12 oz glass a day for women, or 2, 12 oz glasses for men. However, liqueurs, vodka, rum, gin, whiskey, have higher sugar content and tend to raise triglycerides. They usually are mixed with sugary soft drinks or concentrated sweet mixes. High triglycerides can build dangerous arterial plaques. Limit these drinks to 1-2 times a week.

According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease results in 17.5 million deaths worldwide. Heart disease is the single greatest cause of death in both the United States and the world accounting for over half of all deaths.

Given this stark reality it is important to clearly know your major risk factors. According to the American Heart Association, there are 10 leading risk factors. They are:

• Age - According to mortuary tables, more than 83% of the people who die from heart disease are 65 or older.

• Race - If you are African American, Mexican American, American Indian, native Hawaiian or Asian American than your risk is higher than the Caucasian community.

• Sex - Men have both a greater risk of heart attack and having it at an earlier age than women.

• Family History - There is a close association for heart disease if your parents or close relatives have some form of heart disease.

• Smoking - Your risk for developing heart disease is two to four times greater than those who do not smoke.

• High Blood Pressure - One out of every three Americans have high blood pressure. Not only does it increase your risk for heart attacks and kidney failure but it is the number one risk factor for stroke.

• High Cholesterol - As your blood cholesterol increases so does your risk for heart disease.

• Diabetes - This disease seriously increases your risk for heart disease since approximately 65% of people with diabetes die from some form of cardiovascular disease.

• Sedentary Lifestyle - The greater your inactivity the greater your risk.

• Overweight/Obesity - There is a direct correlation with excess body fat, especially fat around the midsection, and the increased risk for heart disease and stroke; even if there are no additional risk factors.

I've ranked 5 major risk factors for heart disease based on what you can control and what I believe are the most important to address first. They are:

1. High Blood Pressure
This is the most important area to gain control over. If you do not know what your current blood pressure reading is or if you have not had your blood pressure taken in the last 6 months, have it taken.

Your blood pressure will be given to you in two numbers such as 110/70 mm Hg. Your systolic number is the first and highest number. Your diastolic number is the second and lowest number. If these numbers are above 140/90 then you have high blood pressure.

High blood pressure will damage your heart and your endothelial cells, which are critical to cardiovascular health. They also play a major role in controlling your blood pressure because they produce a molecule called nitric oxide, which regulates the muscle tone of your blood vessels.

2. Smoking
Most people equate smoking with cancer. While this association is true smoking is also the number one risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. It is estimated that 40% of all cardiovascular deaths are due to smoking.

The carcinogenic components in tobacco damage the endothelial cells that line the walls of your arteries. This affects your body's ability to produce nitric oxide which in turn affects your blood pressure. The carbon monoxide from the burned tobacco interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen. This increases your heart rate and can raise your systolic blood pressure. Smoking also constricts the blood vessels in your arms and legs. This increases the resistance to blood flow which causes your diastolic blood pressure to increase.

3. Overweight/Obesity
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 66% of adults age 20 years and over are overweight with 32% clinically obese. With this dangerous rise in excess fat weight there has been a rise in high blood pressure and an epidemic increase in diabetes.

The greater your percent body fat, the more out of balance your hormonal level will be and the harder it will be for your body to stabilize its blood sugar levels. It is for this reason that I combine diabetes with overweight issues. Most people who get a good handle on their weight and their dietary choices will see a drastic improvement in their blood sugar levels to help prevent type II diabetes. The majority of those with adult onset type II diabetes could prevent and/or reverse the process if they lost the fat and ate a diet that supported the health of their body rather than satisfying their cravings.

4. High Cholesterol
There are two main types of cholesterol are high density cholesterol or HDL and low density cholesterol or LDL. Of the total cholesterol reading the LDL will be the higher amount. Unfortunately your LDL is what also harms your cardiovascular system. Your goal is to lower your bad cholesterol which is your LDL and raise the level of your good cholesterol which is your HDL.

Your LDL cholesterol damages the intercellular junctions between the endothelial cells allowing deposits to build up. This causes the smooth and flexible lining of your blood vessels to become rough and hard leading to the disease commonly called arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis. As this process continues over time, the deposits or plaques become larger which narrows the interior of the blood vessel making it harder for blood to pass through. This increases resistance to blood flow which can cause your blood pressure to increase.

The narrowing of your blood vessels also causes blood turbulence that can lead to the formation of blood clots. These blood clots, if large enough or if they pass through too narrow of an opening, can eventually lodge themselves in a blood vessel causing a blockage. When this happens in the heart we call it a heart attack. When it happens in the brain it is called a stroke.

A simple method to control your cholesterol is to make sure you consume an adequate amount of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found mainly in fruits, vegetables, dry beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Soluble fiber not only lowers LDL cholesterol but also raises HDL cholesterol.

5. Sedentary Lifestyle
You were designed to move and exercise. Properly applied exercise will strengthen your heart muscle, increase the diameter of the coronary arteries and improve your lung function. As the heart muscle is strengthened it usually improves the efficiency of its contraction. This results in a greater volume of blood being pushed out of the heart to improve blood flow.

Exercise can also improve capillary function and help to build additional capillary beds. This decreases resistance to blood flow to help lower your diastolic blood pressure. Most studies show that at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity done 3 to 5 days per week can have a positive effect on your cardiovascular health.

Conclusion
In today's world of pharmaceutical advertising people get the general impression that they need to see their doctor for the right kind of pill to solve their health issue. This is not to say that medication doesn't have an important application to your overall health. However, your ability to reduce your risk for heart disease is a lot greater than what you may have previously thought.

When you're approaching potential joint venture partners, it's very important to get to the point and tell them why you are contacting them.

Pique their interest. You might say, "I love what you are doing. I would love to talk with you later to see how I can be part of _________." Or, "I would love to see how we can support/promote each other. What do you have coming up that I can help promote?"

Then, before you ever say "Yes" to any JV partnership, make sure it is backed up by a formal agreement that spells everything out. Too many times people have said, "I heard you say," and "I thought it was clear that you would..." All parties must mutually agree to the contract and sign it. Don't be afraid to put what you want and need in writing because successful people know how important this is.

If you've been involved in a job search, you know there is always that point in the interview process, usually toward the end of an interview, where the interviewer asks, "Do you have any questions for me?" If you're not prepared, it could take you by surprise and you'll find yourself stuttering and stammering around trying to come up with something to say.

You probably take the time to prepare answers for job interview questions that you expect to be addressed during the interview such as knowing how to articulate your strengths and weaknesses, discussing your skill sets, or how you handled a difficult situation in the past. Don't blow the end of the interview trying to come up with something, anything to say-be prepared and end the interview on a positive note.

The following are 5 "Ready-to-Go" questions to ask employers - you can ask "as is", or modify them to fit your situation:

Question #1: From the information I've given you about my work background, do you think my talents and skill sets will enable me to serve you and your company well in this role?

The answer to this question will be a good indicator as to what essential skills the hiring manager expects you to be able to do while hitting the ground running. You'll also get a feel for skills you may not be strong in, but can learn along the way. This gives you an overall idea of where you stand in the eyes of the hiring manager.

Question #2: Can you describe to me some of the challenges you see for this position, especially in the beginning while getting familiar with the position and its' responsibilities?

This information will reveal what level of stress may be involved in this role, what types of activities you'll be involved in to accomplish the short-term goals, how much of a learning curve you can expect, and may give you an idea of just how long it may take you to get up to speed and feel comfortable in the role.

Question #3: Could you tell me a little bit about the overall morale of the employees and the company culture?

If you want to know whether or not you'll fit into the company's culture and work environment, knowing how the current employees feel about their situation is a good starting point. Is it so corporate that people are high-strung and stressed out all of the time? Is it a more laid back environment, or more middle of the road? These are some of the factors that may concern you because only you know what type of work environment stifles your abilities and creativity and what energizes or motivates you.

Question #4: Can you tell me about your leadership style? For example, could I feel comfortable approaching you openly to discuss a concern or to ask a question?

It is important that you know up front whether or not you can feel comfortable approaching your supervisors or managers. Is the door always open, or is it more of a "figure it out on your own" environment? Knowing whether or not you can feel comfortable working in an environment that fits your personality and style is important. For example, if someone's management style is direct, loud, or abrupt, can you honestly deal with it every day if you're a quiet and easy going person?

Question #5: I am very interested in the position with your company. Could you tell me what the next step is in the interview process?

Whatever you do, don't pass up this opportunity to end the interview by leaving a lasting "positive" impression in the hiring manager's mind. It's wise to use this part of the interview to show that you really are interested enough in the company and position that you'd like to know what to do next. This demonstrates your eagerness to move forward.

Asking questions helps you to find out more "insider information" about the company, position, and the actual responsibilities and activities you'll juggle once onboard. The answers help you determine whether or not the position really is the best fit for you and the hiring company. It's better to get as much information as you can ahead of time so when it comes down to a decision-you make the best one possible.

Before we begin, let me say that I use the term "personal development" very loosely. Anything that we are doing in life that helps us to grow personally, is personal development. So, taking a new cooking class is personal development. Deciding to travel to a new country and experience the native culture is committing to personal development. Even if all we're doing is trying out a new Church, we can apply the steps listed here to help us give it everything we've got.

This is a follow-up article to "Three Critical Steps to Starting a Personal Development Program RIGHT". Now, let's talk about what it takes to actually go through the process of a personal development program - successfully.

1. Understand Consistency
What happens if we exercise like crazy for two months and then stop? What happens to a business that gives itself three months to become profitable? It doesn't matter how good the exercise program was or how good the business idea was - the secret to success in every area of life is consistency.

So how do we know when to give-up? Maybe we were committed, passionate, and flexible - all the great characteristics we know - and it still isn't working. What do we do then? Where do we draw the line? The first thing to do is to ask ourselves, were we truly being consistent? Or, were we being "discretionary"? Let's be brutally honest with ourselves.

I do about an hour's worth of morning rituals (meditations, visualizations, exercises) every day. I usually wake up at 6:30 AM in order to give myself enough time to do these rituals and start my day. One day, I had an early breakfast meeting to attend, requiring me to wake up at 4:00 AM in order to complete my rituals. One of my friends said to me: "You're getting up at 4:00 AM?? Why not make an exception since this is a unique occurrence." I responded, "Unique occurrences seem to happen more often than we'd like to admit. If I make an exception this time, I'm training my mind to think that exceptions are OK. I want to train my mind to be consistent. And this is the first test in being consistent." Exceptions kill consistency. Exceptions are euphemisms for excuses.

2. Acknowledge Yourself
As important as consistency is, we won't be perfect. We're all human and we're going to fall short of our potential and some of our goals. Let's not dwell on what we've missed, instead, let's acknowledge what we've gained. Anthony Robbins says "Sometimes we think we're losing the game of life when we're really winning, simply because we're not keeping score." It's easy to lose perspective and to forget where we've come from. It's important to take a step back and to acknowledge ourselves for what we have accomplished.

Sometimes I get frustrated with myself and my business success (can you believe it?). Then I think. Three Publications, CD with Chicken Soup Co-Author, 1000+ subscribers in fifteen countries, and record sales at Canada's largest book retailer - not bad for fourteen months in business.

Take the time to acknowledge yourself. If your life is worth living, it's worth recording. If you haven't written in a journal in a long time, maybe the first thing to do is to list all the things you've done in your life. Don't just make it like a resume; make sure to include the lives you've touched over the years and the difference you have made for your family, friends, and co-workers. Think of how you've changed in your values, your beliefs, and your attitudes. Then, most importantly, read it back to yourself and smile. :)

3. Exercise Patience
It still isn't happening!!! What do we do? In our fast-paced culture, people seem to want miracles in minutes. I know I'm guilty of this sometimes. You might be thinking, "Wait a minute - what about all these programs that claim to change people over a weekend?" Well, that's true. In fact Tony Robbins says "Change happens in an instant." So what we need to do here is define what "change" is.

There's internal change, and there's external change. Internal change has to deal with mentality, attitude, insight, perspective, desire, motivation, values, beliefs, etc. External change deals with the results we're after like relationships, finances, vitality. Internal change causes external change. Internal change happens in an instant (when the student is ready). That's why some people who attend life-changing seminars have their lives consequently go in a noticeable new direction. They look different, they feel different. They have a new energy and a refueled passion about life. These are examples of internal change. How about the external change? When do the attendees see tangible differences in their lifestyle? When will passive acquaintances notice the difference in these people? Sometimes the external change comes quickly. Sometimes, it doesn't. That's life.

And when external change doesn't come quickly, we need to exercise patience. Giving up is not the answer. Having faith and continuing to be consistent in our plans will eventually yield results.

4. Teach What You're Learning
Let's talk with other people about some of the new insights, distinctions, and knowledge we've been learning. This helps us to conceptualize and understand information at a much deeper level. When we are articulating a concept or idea to someone else, our brain tends to believe it and apply it more effectively and more consistently. In the movie "Training Day" we heard a phrase repeated many times: "It's not what you know, it's what you can prove." This is why it's important not only to learn, but then to teach what we've learned to others. This ensures our ability to prove what we know.

You don't have to be a professional speaker or an accomplished author to be able to share your experiences. The operative word in step number four is "learning" not "learned." Before I made my passion of personal development into my career, I was talking to people about it for thirteen years. And I think that's what had helped me to apply the teachings in my own life - and that's what helps me to apply it today. By sharing the education with others, I also get valuable feedback and perspectives from a variety of people with varying personalities and opinions.
We don't just learn from tapes and books - we automatically learn from the people we associate with, whether consciously or unconsciously. Remember that poor minds gossip and talk negatively about other people. Most people talk about places, events, news and activities. Visionaries talk about concepts and ideas.

Personal development programs transform people's lives. Sometimes, it depends on the program; sometimes it depends on the person's ability to pick a program that is right for them. More often than not, it depends on the person's commitment to understand and follow these four cornerstones. Personal development programs DO transform people's lives. Personal development can transform your life, too.

Strong images can be very helpful for gathering your energy, clarifying your intention and focusing your resolve, especially when you are working toward a goal that may be new for you. So envision the end result -- the picture of how you'd like your space or your time to look and feel. Come back to that image when you feel your energy flagging. You can always refresh yourself with the vision of your goal, knowing that step-by-step, you'll get there!

So, here's where we start. Your time and your space are both finite. If they become filled with unnecessary tasks or objects, you will struggle to find time and room for the really important things.

How do you open things up, once the clutter has gotten out of hand? I suggest that you try these 3 Wise Gardening Guidelines to rid yourself of the space and time clutter that chokes your potential:

1. Divide the job into sections.
If it's discouraging to look at your situation as a whole, adopt the philosophy of the wise gardener. You know that you can't weed your whole garden in a single afternoon. So what do you do? You divide it into sections, and clear out a piece at a time.

2. Start with the easiest challenge.
You may be tempted to take on a big project in order to make the most progress. But you can actually progress more quickly by starting small. That's because you build muscle, rather than strain your back, by growing strength gradually. If you have ever thrown yourself into gardening after a lengthy hiatus, you know exactly what I mean!

So, for example, begin by de-cluttering a small part of your To-Do List or calendar. Just omit one or two activities you're ready to let go of. Or maybe try clearing a small area in your house -- a drawer or a countertop. Once you've de-cluttered something, you'll see and experience the results -- and that helps fuel your next de-cluttering effort.

3. Maintain your streamlined schedule (or cleared area) as you move forward.
You are working to create a new system, so maintenance needs to become a habit. As you incorporate this change into your routine, you create a base so that you can build on your progress.

Think of the garden image: After you clear the weeds and admire your work, you might choose to mulch the area to discourage new weeds from taking the place of the old. Savoring your work and the spaciousness it creates is part of the reward that encourages you to keep going. And keeping up that good work means that you are keeping those muscles in shape -- standing you in good stead for weeding new areas or maintaining what you've already cleared!

As you chip away at the chaos that clutter creates, and find more time and space for yourself, you will be amazed to see what emerges! That's because clutter not only clogs your time and your space, it clogs your energy, your creativity, and your confidence, as well.

Of course, letting go of habits is hard. And clutter is nothing if not a habit! But just give these tips a try and see what approaching this issue with steadiness, curiosity, and compassion does for you. Before you know it, you'll start experiencing changes.

Start small, stick with it, and reward every positive step that you make. Don't expect magic, and magic will happen!
